Spiritual Emphasis is a major aspect that sets Teen Challenge apart from the clinical or secular approach. Teen Challenge goes beyond the "twelve steps" and addresses GOD Himself as being the HIGHER POWER.
We teach that in many cases, God is the ONLY alternative to receive power and assistance to change from the failure they have been to a contributing member of society.

The program is based on four basic principles:
1. There is hope for a person with life controlling problems.
2. Sin, not drugs, alcohol, etc., is the major problem.
3. The only cure for sin and its symptoms (drugs, alcohol, etc.) is Jesus Christ.
4. Jesus Christ, living within a person takes the desire for sin out of that person's life.

When the urge to sin is taken out, the desire for drugs, alcohol, and all manner of deviant behavior is also removed. When the root problem is dealt with, the symptoms also disappear. In many cases drug and alcohol addiction is more of a symptom than a root cause. Many institutions are very successful in treating and "drying out" an individual; but to resolve the root cause is an entirely different matter. These causes are more often issues of the heart rather than issues of addiction.
The bruises of divorce, physical abuse, sexual abuse, dysfunctional family relationships and unforgiveness require long term attention. Until the root cause has been dealt with, and the individual has "worked through" this trauma; the addiction will often reoccur.
The reason that our program is at least sixteen months long is this: with time, our staff is enabled to work through the root causes of each individual's problem. In light of God's Word, an environment is created in which God can heal the memory.
